Full-time Safety Manager

at Staffworthy Inc in South Carolina

In collaboration with the General Manager, the Safety and Environmental Manager will develop and implement strategies and programs to ensure compliance with Local, State, and Federal regulatory requirements and achieve World-Class safety within the Mill. This role requires a hands-on approach to provide proactive environmental, occupational health, and safety support to site employees with the goal of achieving zero Total Incident Rate (TIR). The Safety and Environmental Manager is responsible for stewarding the implementation of safety management systems and programs to achieve and maintain zero recordable injuries, ensuring compliance with OSHA General Industry Standards, and Norbord Safety Star certification.

Responsibilities:

Identify, assess, and communicate conformance with regulatory and corporate safety expectations.
Identify safety-training requirements and facilitate the development and implementation of safety training programs.
Develop and implement systems and metrics to track and communicate safety performance.
Implement strategic safety improvement initiatives to achieve a world-class safety culture.
Complete regulatory and corporate recordkeeping and reporting requirements for Environmental and Health and Safety programs.
Ensure compliance with air and water permitting regulations from local, state, and federal agencies.
Develop a strategy to include safety and environmental stewardship in the operating rhythm.
Facilitate identification of safety and environmental requirements for operational changes.
Provide objective feedback to the management team on safety behaviors and performance.
Coach individuals at all levels to improve safety behavior and performance.
Develop opportunities and facilitate tracking of employee engagement in safety/safety improvement initiatives.
Interpret/analyze and report safety Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for use by the management team.
Assess and report on contractor performance.
Maintain Occupational Health programs, including medical surveillance requirements, in conformance with regulatory and Norbord expectations.
Ensure integrity and identify improvement opportunities in routine risk identification and control programs.
Monitor the quality and consistency of incident investigation and reporting processes, ensuring proper identification and implementation of corrective actions.

Accountabilities:

Identify and implement improvements in the OSB process and operations through data-based analytical troubleshooting practices.
Provide operational and engineering training as required.
Collate and manage information that measures and drives improvement in variability reduction.
Provide supervision, project management, and planning for capital project implementation and OSB maintenance shuts.
Liaise with equipment suppliers to improve knowledge and correct deficiencies in the OSB process.
Stay informed of all new technical and process initiatives in the OSB industry.
Interface with IT to improve and refine the OSB data acquisition system (On-Line).

Qualification(s) / Training Requirement(s):

Minimum qualifications include:

BachelorÂ’s Degree in a safety or environmental sciences discipline with 3-5 years of manufacturing experience OR 10 years of manufacturing management experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Managerial/Supervisory experience (Preferably in Safety or Environmental management).
Thorough knowledge of Safety and/or Environmental concepts and application.

Knowledge of best practices, principles, and methods to achieve a sustained, safe manufacturing environment.
Solid understanding of facilitating a successful safety program.
Leading and setting the example with safety.
Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships and maintain them over time.
Analyze data to make informed decisions.

Working Conditions:

Role requires a person to work in various conditions such as heat, cold, snow, rain, ice, frost, humidity, severe storms, etc. Special working conditions may include regular evening and weekend work, shift work, working outdoors, working as a team regardless of challenge, etc. Exposure to noise, dirt, grease, water, and sawdust is common.

Physical Requirements:

Physical ability to perform the essential job functions of the position, which includes climbing stairs, navigating catwalks, working at heights, lifting up to 50 pounds, stooping, and bending.

This position has 1 direct report - EHS Coordinator.

Salary: $90,000 - $105,000
