Sterile Processing Technician
Place of Performance: Naples Italy

General Description:
Sterile Processing Technician shall be responsible for all aspects of the Sterile Processing Division (SPD) from daily operations to resolving problems that arise to meet the mission. Work assignment for Main Operating Room and Dental Clinic include but are not limited to the following: decontamination, high level disinfection (HLD), instrument and set preparation, facilitation of equipment maintenance and disposition, and supply ordering and storage. Determines, adjusts, maintains, and applies proper processing procedures for the full range of dental and surgical supplies and equipment used in the hospital including all clinics.

Citizenship:
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.


Education:
• High School Diploma or equivalent.


Certification:
• Must have Basic Life Support.


Experience/Knowledge:
• Shall read, write, speak and understand the English language fluently.
• Knowledge and skill to perform duties encompassing the complete work cycle required to decontaminate, prepare, sterilize, store, and issue the full range of sterile medical and dental supplies and equipment used in the hospital wards, clinics, and operating rooms.
• Knowledge of and skill in applying the governing policy and regulations pertaining to Sterile Processing of surgical instruments and sterile medical and supplies.
• An understanding of basic principles of microbiology as they apply to medical supply operations, especially as they relate to the resistance of microorganisms to external destructive agents such as heat, chemical and ionization radiation.
• Ability to operate and retrieve data utilizing automated tracking and personal computer systems.
• A thorough knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques including characteristics of various types of detergents, cleaning techniques, sterilizing medium, sterilizer operation; tests to determine effectiveness of sterilization and packaging, storage and shelf life characteristics.
• Ability to recognize a wide variety of instruments and supplies and to discriminate among similar appearing instruments that varies in size, curvature of tips, and nomenclature.
• Must have detailed knowledge of surgical and dental instrumentation to include proper function and use in order to identify defective and/or damaged instruments prior to inclusion in the surgical set.
• Ability to receive, process, and inspect flexible endoscopes for High Level Disinfection by manual process or by way of automated endoscope reprocessing unit in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines.
• Knowledge of the technical names, uses, physical characteristics, maintenance procedures, and assembly, adjustment, and processing procedures for the full range of medical, dental and surgical supplies and equipment used in the hospital.
• A good working knowledge of the availability, economics, use, operation, maintenance, assembly and disassembly of the full range of medical and dental supplies, instruments, equipment and the specific cleaning, sterilizing and storage requirements for each.
• A thorough familiarity with hospital and clinic layout, staffing, and the integration of the sterile processing operation into the total healthcare program.
• A basic understanding of medical, dental and surgical terminology, therapeutic procedures and of human anatomy and physiology.
• Ability to recognize a wide variety of instruments and supplies and to discriminate among similar appearing instruments that varies in size, curvature of tips, and nomenclature.
• Must have detailed knowledge of surgical and dental instrumentation to include proper function and use in order to identify defective and/or damaged instruments prior to inclusion in the surgical or dental set.
• Knowledge of The Joint Commission (TJC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and Federal Drug Administration (FDA) standards as they apply to sterile processing and the distribution of medical supplies.


Board Certification:
• Knowledge of all requirements to pass the Sterile Processing and Distribution Technicians exam.
• Certified Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) as a Certified Sterile
Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).
