Museum Technician
Places of Performance: VA (Arlington, Springfield, Crystal City)

General Description:
Museum Technician shall ensure that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Museum is meeting its collections management and educational goals. Museum Technician work affects the quality of the visit and an individual’s impressions of the museum and the agency at-large. Museum Technician work also promotes the museum’s purpose of educating the general public and agency employees.

Specific Tasks:
• The work is performed in both an office and storage facility environment. Normal safety precautions are required.
• Routine work is assigned on a very general basis with no instruction as to procedures or sequencing, and is judged on a "results" basis. Special assignments are accompanied with necessary specific instructions and are reviewed upon completion. Training situations may involve close supervision and guidance until the new technique is mastered.
• You will often work on valuable and/or rare objects and artifacts involving a high degree of responsibility for your protection.
• You will assist the collections manager and educator, and is responsible for:
a) routine acquisition and processing of objects or artifacts
b) keeping cataloging records
c) cleaning, preparing, and storing collection objects
d) locating objects in storage area
e) tabulating information from records
f) preparing objects or artifacts for close examination by the supervisor, other staff, or researchers
g) performing other duties which assist in the physical care of the collection
h) researching and creating content for exhibits
i) research and presenting guided tours of the museum
j) providing programs for children
k) researching and updating social media content
• Collections management. Perform technical duties in connection with the management of a museum collection and/or the establishment and maintenance of the public exhibit area. Typical assignments include:
a) Acquisitioning and cataloging duties: Match field labels, notes and other information with newly received artifacts; labels artifacts using data from field diaries; inventories collections, documents and stores artifacts; maintains cataloging; indexing and cross reference system.
b) Identification duties: Identify and sort artifacts. Identifications are usually tentative and subject to confirmation. You may be required to locate and identify uncatalogued artifacts.
c) Research assistant duties: Assist the museum’s collection manager in the compilation and tabulation of data necessary to research being conducted in the collection. You may prepare bibliographic material involving familiarity with library techniques.
• Museum Education.
a) Tours: Assist the museum educator and visitor services staff in arranging
visits, greeting visitors, and giving tours.
b) Docent duties: Perform routine guide duties, answering visitors' questions,
giving general information and directions.
c) Programs: Assist the museum educator with identifying, planning, and
executing public programs. You may work with DEA in publicizing these tours.
d) Data: Track and analyze data regarding visitor services, either through
the use of Trackin’ TimeTM or other methods of visitor data collection. This is not specific personal information, but rather visitor behavior data.
• You will be working at DEA Headquarters or the museum collections storage site.
• Occasionally, you will be required to travel to attend Museum conferences. There are several museum conferences held yearly that the Museum would like the employee to attend. These conferences cover the latest and best practices of preservation of historical information to include objects and photographs, which will support the Agency and the Museum’s collection moving forward.


Citizenship:
• Shall be a U.S. citizen.


Experience:
• At least two years of combined experience with collection management and museum education.
• Experience in museum tour development and presentations.
• Experience working with the public.
• Experience in researching and cataloging artifacts.



Knowledge:
• Must possess or acquire a skill and beginning "expertise" in the specialized subject of the collection.
• Must have knowledge of museum procedures, necessary techniques, required tools and materials.
• Demonstrate knowledge of museum standards in the areas of collections management and museum education.
• Demonstrate use of recognized standards in collections processing.
• Demonstrate use of collections management software.
