Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Systems Automation Services, the Server Systems Engineer will serve in a team environment focused on the design, deployment, lifecycle management, and continuous improvement of UO Cloud server computing. Core UO Cloud services include private cloud virtual servers running managed Windows and RedHat operating systems. Additionally, the team operates several management applications to operate private cloud services at an enterprise scale. UO Cloud services are provided within a complex academic and research environment. The Server Systems Engineer works across the Systems Automation Services team to provide technical work leadership involving the design, deployment, lifecycle management, and continuous improvement of UO Cloud services. The Server Systems Engineer will assist the team with best practice design and use of enterprise management tools to efficiently manage UO Cloud services. The Server Systems Engineer possesses technology knowledge in multiple areas and functions as a subject matter expert based on experience.

The Server Systems Engineer assists in the identification of short- and long-term technology objectives that strategically align the needs of the campus community with UO Cloud services. As part of this responsibility, the Server Systems Engineer will collaborate with team members to transform high-level direction and strategic inputs into target-state roadmaps that ensure Information Systems is positioned to advance research, academic, and administrative missions.

The Server Systems Engineer will contribute to complex projects and cross-functional technical teams to conduct and deliver technology capabilities. This position develops and facilitates technology planning direction and decisions in conjunction with the Information Services team, university stakeholders, and vendors.

This position may supervise student employees and will be part of an on-call rotation that may be expected to work weekends.

This position may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times.

Minimum Requirements
This classification requires a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in systems analysis and related programming support functions generally obtained by a bachelor's degree in computer science, or an equivalent amount of training and applied experience.

Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, electrical engineering, or related field.
• 2+ years’ experience using VMware tools to operationalize server provisioning, orchestration, and self- service elements.
• 2+ years’ experience using enterprise applications to operationalize lifecycle management for Windows Server and/or RedHat server operating systems (Puppet Enterprise, RedHat Satellite, Microsoft SCCM/ECM, Active Directory).
• 3+ years’ experience supporting Windows Server and/or RedHat server operating systems.
• Experience working with data center network topologies including TCP/IP, switching, routing, VLANs, load-balancing, and firewalls.
• Experience using common programming and scripting languages to codify platform automations and/or API integrations.
• 2+ years’ experience working with VMware software defined data center services such as NSX-T Data Center, vRealize Automation, and vRealize Network Insight.
• Experience with private cloud services at a university or similarly complex enterprise environment.
