Full-time Host Family Recruiter

Status: (short-term) Independent Contractor Location: Washington, DC Reports to: Coordinator of Program Development Mission: Youth for Understanding USA (YFU) advances intercultural understanding, mutual respect and social responsibility through educational exchanges for youth, families and communities. Through the exchange experience, YFU students gain intercultural understanding, learn mutual respect, and develop a sense of social responsibility. Their experience abroad gives them leadership competencies necessary to meet the challenges and benefit from the opportunities of a fast-changing global community. ABOUT THE PROGRAM: For Understanding USA (YFU) is running several short term inbound programs for high school students from around the world. During their short time in the US, the students engage in English Language classes, as well as cultural and social events. They are placed with volunteer host families, who invite the students to be a part of their family for these two weeks. The students make ever-lasting bonds with other students, their host families, the volunteers, and the employees and contractors that work with them. The programs run from July 14 to either July 28, 2018, or August 2, 2018. The Host Family Recruiter may recruit for both of the date ranges. RESPONSIBILITIES: As the Host Family Recruiter (HFR) you will play the largest role in the students’ experience in the USA as the homestay is often the most meaningful part of a student’s experience. YFU will concurrently run a program on STEM and Politics and Debate, most of the students will stay for the University Visit add-on program, but some will depart at the end of their 2 week program: July 14, 2018 to July 28, 2018 – STEM July 14, 2018 to July 28, 2018 – Politics and Debate July 29-Aug 2, 2018 – University Visit The HFR will be expected to recruit for all of these date ranges, students may be placed two in one home provided each student has their own bed. Student Placement: The HFR will be responsible for finding host families for each of the students. The HFR will: Be provided with a handbook to assist with this activity, as well as access to YFU’s lead system. Be expected to utilize their network to find families new to YFU. Be expected to assist potential host families complete their application and all supplementary documentation and requirements. Be responsible for ensuring that all families meet all US Department of State regulations for hosting. Conduct Host Family Interviews when a volunteer cannot be secured. Assist with moving any students if necessary (example host family has an emergency and cannot host, etc.) Remain on call during the program to assist with any HF placement issues (unlikely). Submit a financial report of any expenses (expected to be minimal) with related receipts at the program conclusion. YFU USA expense policies will be provided, and must be followed in order to receive reimbursement. NOTE: As these programs depend on enrollment, while enrollment numbers have been met, if for any reason the program is canceled this position may be immediately terminated. Appropriate expenses will be covered as outlined in the contract. QUALIFICATIONS AND KNOWLEDGE: Undergraduate degree or equivalent Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work under pressure on multiple tasks with deadlines Ability to adhere to Department of State rules and regulations Computer literacy Demonstrated Customer Service and problem-solving experience Experience recruiting Strong Networking and community-building skills Excellent communication skills SCHEDULE FOR PERFORMANCE: Placement efforts for the summer short term program will take place at the contractors’ discretion during the weeks before the program start date. All students and chaperones must be placed (including all paperwork completed) 2 weeks prior to the program start (June 29). Within two weeks after the end of the program, the HFR will submit a financial report and a written report. The written report should include any notes on specific HFs, including families that might be interested in hosting a long-term student, those who did not host for whatever reason, etc. PAYMENT SCHEDULE: Payment will be provided in a lump sum after the conclusion of the program and submission of the narrative project report and financial report. No payment will be made until reports have been received. Payment is $150 per student placed.
