Department Summary
The University of Oregon Police Department (UOPD) is a community oriented and trust based policing agency within the University of Oregon. Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to protect the campus community through use of proactive prevention and outreach strategies. Community Service Officers utilize community-oriented service and problem-solving techniques, and seek to routinely engage the community in programming aimed at identifying and reducing behavioral and criminal conduct that diminishes the quality of the academic experience.

In the conduct of their prescribed duties, Community Service Officers provide support to police patrol operations. Community Service Officers may act as first responders to medical emergencies occurring on campus property, issue parking citations, patrol campus and edge campus areas, secure university facilities, provide security for athletic and other campus events, supplement Security Operations (SOC) coverage and other related duties.

This position will have regular daily contact with all members of the University of Oregon campus community in addition to members of the general public. They will serve as the face of the program representing UOPD, specifically the security unit.

This position makes decisions daily that relate to the safety and security of the campus community. These decisions could affect the Community Service Officer’s own personal safety, the personal safety of the university community and the security of buildings and property on campus. This position requires self-initiation based on guidance and training.

Daily reports are reviewed by the UOPD Watch Commander and security related functional reports are reviewed by the Director of Security & Support Services or Security Delegate to ensure performance is efficient, safe and meets both expectations and applicable requirements. Work schedule will vary depending on department needs.

Essential Personnel
This position must make every reasonable effort to arrive to campus at their regularly scheduled shift. Events such as, but not limited to, inclement weather and/or university closures do not exempt this position from reporting to work unless otherwise notified by their supervisor or manager. Essential personnel must provide reliable and current contact information at all times.

Driving Requirement
It is an essential requirement of this position to qualify for and maintain UO driver's certification eligibility, which includes maintaining an Oregon driver’s license throughout employment in this position.

Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma or GED/equivalent.
One year of experience communicating with the public.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• This position will require a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain UO Driver's Certification.
• First Aid and CPR/AED training or ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
• Must be able to pass a criminal background check that includes a psychological evaluation and a medical evaluation with a drug screening.

Professional Competencies
• Knowledge of federal codes and regulations, State statutes, City of Eugene municipal ordinances, University of Oregon rules and regulations (Oregon Administrative Rules), and UOPD standards and policies.
• Ability to take quick, appropriate action in stressful circumstances, maintain composure in emergency situations, and handle confidential information with discretion.
• Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to maintain legible handwriting, type accurately and efficiently, and prepare a standardized report; candidates fluent in a second language are highly regarded.
• Ability to routinely conduct self in a mature, professional and respectful demeanor with equal regard to all contacts.
• Ability to use established policy and innovation in solving customer service and programmatic issues
• Ability to follow directions and administrative policies, procedures, and guidelines.
• Ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented and time-sensitive environment.
• Demonstrated integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned duties.
• Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• Ability to adhere to the Clery Act, FERPA, mandatory reporting and Title IX reporting responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience writing clear and accurate reports or documents.
• Experience managing personal workload and prioritizing tasks.
• Experience working in customer service, retail, or other professional experience engaging with the public.
• Volunteer experience.
• Bilingual language skills.
• Associate or higher college degree.
• Experience working with a diverse environment.
